Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism, 10th Anniversary Edition

Dr. Melanie Joy is a Harvard-educated psychologist specializing in relationships and the psychology of oppression and social transformation. She is widely recognized as a thought leader and is best known for her pioneering work developing her theory of carnism, which explains why people eat certain animals but not others. Her analyses have helped explain why people engage in “nonrelational” behaviors—behaviors that harm other people, animals, the planet, and themselves—as well as how to change this pattern.

Melanie is the award-winning author of seven books, including the bestselling Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear CowsBeyond Beliefs, and How To End Injustice Everywhere. Her work has been featured in major media outlets around the world, and she has received a number of awards, including the Ahimsa Award – previously given to the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela – for her work on global nonviolence. She has given talks and trainings in over 50 countries, and she is also the founding president of the international NGO Beyond Carnism.
