What does ‘meat raised without antibiotics’ mean — and why is it important?

Last week, sandwich giant Subway announced that in the coming years, its U.S. restaurants will serve only animal proteins that have never been treated with antibiotics. This is a bold statement that has been months in the making, as consumer and public health groups have pressured Subway to reduce the use of antibiotics in its source animals.
