Mark Schapiro is an investigative journalist specializing in the intersection between science, politics and power. His most recent book is SEEDS OF RESISTANCE: The Struggle for Our Food, a journey in search of the seeds we need to deal with the disruptions of climate change, the four companies which have consolidated control over them, and the extraordinary global movement to defy that trend and reassert control over our food. investigates who controls our most fundamental resource—seeds—as global warming changes the conditions for growing our food. His previous book, THE END OF STATIONARITY: Seeking the New Normal in the Era of Carbon Shock, is a narrative journey to the global hot-spots where climate disruption is leading to economic and political shake-ups as the world contends with global climate disruption. He is a Lecturer at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and was formerly Senior Correspondent at the Center for Investigative Reporting. His environmental journalism on climate change and on toxic chemicals has won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Environmental Journalists and others. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Andrew Kimbrell is an internationally recognized public interest attorney, public speaker, and author. He is the founder and Executive Director of Center for Food Safety. He also is Director of the San Francisco based Center for Technology Assessment, co-founder of Foundation Earth, and President of the Board of Humane Farm Animal Care (that administers the Certified Humane label).   As an attorney, Kimbrell has successfully challenged federal agencies in several historic court cases. He initiated the court challenge that resulted in a U.S. Supreme Court victory forcing, for the first time, EPA regulation of greenhouse gases and their impact on climate change. He also pioneered the legal strategy that led to the Supreme Court ruling that DNA is not patentable due to being a “product of nature.” Through his leadership at CFS, Kimbrell has been at the forefront of legal challenges to genetically engineered crops and lawsuits forcing FDA to adopt new food safety regulations. His legal work has also helped maintain the integrity of organic standards.   As an author and public speaker Kimbrell has been a leading proponent of regenerative forms of agriculture and organic policies. He is the editor of the nationally renowned book Fatal Harvest, The Tragedy of Industrial Agriculture and the author of Your Right to Know: Genetic Engineering and the Secret Changes in Your Food. Kimbrell’s articles and editorials have appeared in The New York Times, Harpers, USA Today, and numerous other print and new media publications such as The Huffington Post.   He has testified numerous times before the U.S. Congress and has been a featured speaker at dozens of colleges and universities around the country and other public forums including Google Author Talks, Slow Food Nation, Bioneers and Ecofarm. He is featured in several documentaries including “The Future of Food,” “FRESH,” and a critique of genetic engineering, “Life Running out of Control.”   Kimbrell is also a noted expert on a wide range of technology and economic issues. His works in this area include his international best-selling book “The Human Body Shop: the Engineering and Marketing of Life” and the printed versions of his influential E.F. Schumacher lectures, “Cold Evil: Technology and Modern Ethics” and “Salmon Economics.”   In addition to his legal degree Kimbrell also has a graduate degree in Psychology and has often written in the field including his book, “The Masculine Mystique.” Besides his public interest work, Kimbrell’s passions include his love of piano (stemming from his earlier career as a concert pianist), poetry, baseball, and wilderness fly fishing.   Kimbrell’s many accolades include a spot on the Utne Reader list of the world’s leading 100 visionaries, and The Guardian recognizing him in 2008 as one of the 50 people “most likely to save the planet.”

McKay Jenkins has been writing about people and the natural world for 30 years. His new book is Food Fight: GMOs and the Future of the American Diet (Avery, an imprint of PenguinRandomHouse, 2017). He is also the author of ContamiNation (Avery, 2016, previously published in hardcover by Random House as What’s Gotten Into Us), which chronicles his investigation into the myriad synthetic chemicals we encounter in our daily lives, and the growing body of evidence about the harm these chemicals do to our bodies and the environment. His book, Poison Spring (Bloomsbury, 2014), co-written with E.G. Vallianatos, has been called “a jaw-dropping expose´ of the catastrophic collusion between the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] and the chemical industry.” (Booklist, starred review) His other books include Bloody Falls of the Coppermine: Madness and Murder in the Arctic Barren Lands (Random House, 2005), the true tale of a pair of French Catholic missionaries who were murdered in the Arctic by a pair of Inuit hunters, and the trial and troubling cultural consequencs of this strange and fascinating event. These are not just the toxins leaking out of industrial dumps — they are the chemicals leaking into us from the products we use every day: from cosmetics, cookware, and the fabric in our upholstery; from pharmaceuticals in our drinking water and the pesticides we spray on our lawns.   I learned this the hard way. Sheldon Krimsky is Lenore Stern Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Department of Urban & Environmental Policy & Planning in the School of Arts & Sciences and Adjunct Professor of Public Health and Community Medicine in the School of Medicine at Tufts University. www.tufts.edu/~skrimsky. He received his BS and MS in physics from Brooklyn College, CUNY and Purdue University respectively, and an MA and PhD in philosophy at Boston University. His research focuses on the linkages between science/technology, ethics/values, and public policy. He has authored, co-authored or edited 14 books and published over 200 papers and reviews that have appeared in: JAMA, Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Medicine, NEJM, American Journal of Bioethics, PLOS ONE among others. His books include Genetic Alchemy; Agricultural Biotechnology & the Environment; Biotechnics & Society, Genetic Justice (Gold Medal winner from Independent Publishers); Hormonal Chaos: The Origins of the Environmental Endocrine Hypothesis and The GMO Deception.
