Many authors speak about promoting health through diet; a handful speaks about the environmental impacts of our diet and even fewer speak about a workable solution to our current environmental dilemma that threatens our very existence as a species. J. Morris Hicks may very well be the ONLY author in the world who speaks passionately about all three. A former strategic management consultant and senior corporate executive with Ralph Lauren in New York, he got curious about the optimal diet for humans in 2002. Since then, he has invested over 10,000 hours researching the topic, has published two books and has posted over 900 articles on his website at hpjmh.com—all in a continuing effort to promote health, hope, and harmony on planet Earth. In addition to an MBA and a BS in Industrial Engineering, he holds a certificate in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, where he has been a member of the board of directors since 2012. Having concluded that our food choices hold the key to the sustainability of our civilization, he has made this his #1 priority---exploring all avenues for influencing humans everywhere to move back to the natural, plant-based diet for our species. I live in Worthington, Ohio (a suburb of Columbus) with my Maine Coon cat, Schroeder. I’ve lived here for almost 30 years, and I love this house and the location because it is close to downtown Worthington (I can walk), and one mile from the office, which means I can go back and forth a lot. In fact, my back yard is gorgeous, with tall trees and a big deck in back, which is often where I work in the afternoon when it’s warm outside. It seems to some people like I work all the time (I’m known for being super productive), but I have a busy life outside of work. I belong to a book club, since reading is one of my passions, and I love watching BookTV on CSPAN on the weekends. I love to dance and belong to the Directors’ Circle for Ballet Met. I attend all of the events I can and unless something really major is going on, I see every performance at least once. I also enjoy symphony concerts, art exhibits, festivals, and parties. I’m actually a social butterfly even though I can appear to be more like a science nerd and bookworm! My other hobbies include hot yoga (Wellness Forum Health has a hot yoga studio in our facility and it is right across the hall from my office!), working out, and running. I love running outside when it is hot, and force myself to run on a treadmill indoors in the winter because when the wind chill dips below 68 degrees F, it’s too cold for me to be outside! =) I have a tiny little place in Port Clinton, Ohio by Lake Erie, where I spend as much time as a can in the summer. My house is a 2-minute walk to the beach, and I can hear the waves and the ferry horns when I’m sitting on the porch or lying on the couch reading. It’s my “happy place” and one of the few places where I really can disconnect, rest, and regenerate. I’m an ambitious person with a lot of lofty goals, one of which is to help disrupt our dysfunctional healthcare system. I work with a great group of people who share this goal and our vision for better healthcare, which makes this daunting task attainable. If you don’t know a lot about me (or even if you do!), follow me on twitter and facebook, read my blog, and sign up for my newsletter and video clips. And always feel free to send an email (pampopper@msn.com) – I really do answer emails myself!   Dr. Pam Popper is a naturopath, an internationally recognized expert on nutrition, medicine and health, and the Executive Director of Wellness Forum Health. The company offers educational programs to both consumers and providers that facilitate informed medical decision-making, diet and lifestyle intervention, and improved long-term health outcomes. Through its own network of providers, Wellness Forum Health offers direct-to-consumer healthcare services. Dr. Popper serves on the Physician’s Steering Committee and the President’s Board for the Physicians’ Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington D.C. Dr. Popper was one of the health care professionals involved in the famed Sacramento Food Bank Project, in which economically disadvantaged people were shown how to reverse their diseases and eliminate medications with diet. Dr. Popper served as part of Dr. T. Colin Campbell’s teaching team at eCornell, teaching part of a certification course on plant-based nutrition. She has been featured in many widely distributed documentaries, including Processed People and Making a Killing and Forks Over Knives, which played in major theaters throughout North America in 2011. She is one of the co-authors of the companion book which was on the New York Times bestseller list for 66 weeks. Her most recent book is Food Over Medicine: The Conversation That Can Save Your Life. Dr. Popper is also a lobbyist and public policy expert and continually works toward changing laws that interfere with patients’ right to choose their health provider and method of care. She has testified in front of legislative committees on numerous occasions and has testified twice in front of the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. Dr. Pam Popper is a straight-talking professional who is not afraid to criticize national health organizations, government agencies, medical professionals, pharmaceutical companies, agricultural organizations and manufacturing companies, many of whom have agendas and priorities that interfere with distributing truthful information and promoting public health. Everyone who is interested in health should hear her speak. For some, their lives may depend on what she has to say!   To learn more, visit www.wellnessforumhealth.com
